EKU Rides: A Social Ridesharing Initiative
Plaster Student Union Ballroom
EKU Rides is a web-based social ridesharing system powered by Zimride Inc. that was implemented in the summer of 2008 at Eastern Kentucky University to reduce student, faculty, and staff travel costs in an environmentally responsible way.
By signing into www.rides.eku.edu or Facebook, EKU students, faculty, and staff can create a social profile that leverages Zimride’s standalone and Facebook social ride infrastructure to find ongoing or one-time ride partners. EKU riders with Facebook accounts have the added advantage of letting their Facebook friends know about their rides.
This poster session describes the story of EKU Rides: from inspiration, getting buy-in, and determining implementation details, to publicizing the system and securing its ongoing financial support.
